When Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto are whisked away to the land of Oz by a tornado, she and a trio of companions made up of a Scarecrow, a Cowardly Lion and Tin Man must find the mythical Wizard of Oz to grant their wishes and send Dorothy home to Kansas. After all, there's no place like home.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC (1965)

The Sound of Music (1965)

Directed by Robert Wise, "The Sound of Music" is one of the classic musicals that everyone needs to have watched. With a stellar leading duo of Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, this is one for all the family to sing along to. 

The story follows Maria as she is sent from her convent to act as the governess for the seven children of Captain Von Trapp, a widowed naval officer. Helping the family come to terms with the death of their mother, Maria endears the children, and their austere father, to her through music.

The Lion King (1994)

Another classic children's film from Disney, "The Lion King", was a box office smash back when it was first released in 1994. Since it first came out, this film has gone from strength to strength, with a theatre spin-off and millions of fans worldwide. 

Directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff, this film also boasts a star-studded cast, with Matthew Broderick, Jeremy Irons and James Earl Jones lending their voices to the famous lions. Following the story of Simba, as he grows from a young, orphaned cub to the mightiest lion of Pride Rock, there is plenty of love, laughs and sing-alongs along the way.

Mary Poppins (1964)

If it's musical medleys you want, then you could do a lot worse than this 60s classic. "Mary Poppins", directed by Robert Stevenson, again stars Julie Andrews in a musical lead alongside Dick Van Dyke and his often maligned Cockney accent. 

Following the Banks children and their magical new nanny, Mary Poppins helps the neglected pair grow closer to their father through music and whimsical adventures.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)

The first in the world-renowned sage, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", is the premier outing for "the boy who lived". Directed by Chris Columbus, and debuting acting stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, while also starring British cinema heavyweights Maggie Smith and Richard Harris, this is a truly magical movie in every sense. 

This first instalment follows Harry Potter, an orphan invited to attend a school for witches and wizards, revealing a whole new magical world.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

One of many great moments in cinema history from Steven Spielberg, "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" is one of the best kids movies out there. 

Starring a young Drew Barrymore and Henry Thomas, the story follows the friendship between a young boy and an alien. In his quest to get his alien friend back to his faraway home, this film manages to make even the toughest audiences weep uncontrollably.

Star Wars (1977)

A triumph of not only children's movies but Sci-Fi too, "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope" is the first of what many consider to be the best trilogy of Star Wars movies. 

Many aficionados will claim that the original trilogy is the place to start for those wishing to induct their children into the ways of the Jedi. The inaugural tale of Luke Skywalker teaming up with a Jedi Knight, a smuggler and a princess to save the galaxy is as timeless as its dread-inducing villain, Darth Vader.

The Jungle Book (1967)

Based on the story by Rudyard Kipling, "The Jungle Book" is another classic Disney sing-along. 

We follow the orphan Mowgli as he, along with his friends Bagheera the Panther and Baloo the Bear, searches for his identity and tries to return to his fellow humans. 

Directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, this beautiful animation is a true gem.

Alice in Wonderland (1951)

If you want to get your kids interested in literature, Disney's "Alice in Wonderland" is a great place to start. 

Based on Lewis Carroll's fantasy and directed by Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred Jackson and Hamilton Luske, this classic animation is a delightful and trippy journey down the rabbit hole that the whole family will enjoy.

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)

Another legendary piece of children's literature, Roald Dahl's fantastical tale of every child's biggest dream, was turned into one of the greatest kids movies of all time. 

Directed by Mel Stuart, "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory" stars the comedic genius that is Gene Wilder as the eccentric chocolate factory owner. 

After Charlie Bucket finds one of five rare golden tickets in a chocolate bar, he is invited to take a tour of the factory that made it, with unbelievable consequences.

The Goonies (1985)

Produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Richard Donner, this classic comedy adventure caper is guaranteed to quench your thirst for adventure. Starring Josh Brolin, Sean Astin and Corey Feldman, this film boasts a cast of promising young actors who would go on to be Hollywood stars. 

Following a group of kids who must find the money to prevent the foreclosure of their home, the search for One-Eyed Willy's treasure is fraught with danger only our heroes can overcome.

Another great musical to add to the list, "Annie", is a classic tale of redemption directed by the great John Huston. 

Starring Aileen Quinn as the red-headed lead, alongside Albert Finney and Tim Curry, this film will have you singing your heart out in no time. 

The story of the young orphan caught between a wealthy businessman who wishes to adopt her to improve his public image and the evil Miss Hannigan and her friends looking to get rich, Annie and her ever-present optimism will no doubt win in the end.

Labyrinth (1986)

From the puppet master himself, "Labyrinth" comes to us from the brilliant mind of Jim Henson. This film will have your kids entranced and delighted from start to finish, starring a young Jennifer Connelly and a hypnotic David Bowie. 

When the Goblin King kidnaps a young girl's baby brother, she must solve the mystical labyrinth to rescue him, with plenty of musical numbers along the way.

Written by John Hughes and directed by Chris Columbus, this holiday treat is an essential watch when Christmas rolls around.

 Starring Macauley Kulkin as the ingenious Kevin, after being left "home alone" while his family leave for their holiday in Paris, a young boy must defend his home from would-be burglars played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern.

This is the perfect choice for family movie night.

Finding Nemo (2003)

Taking a trip to the deep blue sea, courtesy of Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich, "Finding Nemo" is a cautionary tale with the overwhelming moral being that your parents know best. 

After Nemo, a young clownfish, goes missing, his father and a gang of friends attempt to reunite them. With a star-studded array of actors lending their voices to some of our favourite fish, this is one of the greatest kids movies ever made.

Directed by Melanie Mayron, this classic 90s film follows a group of young girls as they try to organise a daycare camp for the children they babysit, but, of course, their neighbours aren't too happy about it.

Frozen (2013)

From the minds of Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee comes another of Disney's greatest children's movies. "Frozen" wasn't just a film - it was a phenomenon.

Ralphie must convince all the adults in his life that a Red Ryder BB gun would make the perfect Christmas present.

The Princess Bride (1987)

When you talk about the classic children's movies of all time, "The Princess Bride" is undoubtedly in the running for the top spot. 

Rob Reiner directs Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Wallace Shawn, and Andre, the Giant, in this fairy tale adventure. Follow Westley as he battles and outwits his enemies to save his true love, Princess Buttercup.

The Karate Kid (1984)

Yet another classic 80s movie, there's no person alive who hasn't learned to "wax on, wax off" after watching this gem. When Daniel and his mother move to California, he soon runs afoul of the school bullies. 

However, befriending the maintenance man in his building turns out to be the best thing he ever did, as besides fixing the plumbing, Mr Miyagi is also a master of karate.
