Continuing to be streamed and watched annually by film students and film lovers alike, this revolutionary piece of cinema changed filmmaking for many.

This story follows the titular character of Charles Foster Kane, a millionaire newspaper tycoon whose death inspires reporters to unscramble the final word he uttered; 'Rosebud'. 

Starring Orson Welles as Kane himself, alongside Joseph Cotten and Dorothy Comingore, this drama-mystery features inventive camera angles and transitions that were revolutionary for the early '40s.

Michael Curtiz directed this war-time romance about a cynical American cafe owner who is stuck deciding to help his former lover and her fugitive husband escape the Nazis or outing them and saving himself. 

This film became a classic because of its real-world relevance, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in their most famous roles. Set in a time when war broke out and the Nazis gained control over Europe, this film inspired the US to enter the war. When morality was being questioned, and lives were at stake, this film about a war love triangle came at precisely the right time. 

The Godfather (1972)

Perhaps being one of the most influential films of all time and creating an unforgettable trilogy that filmmakers would refer back to for decades, The Godfather tells a profound and dramatic crime tale. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, this story documents the transfer of control from an aged patriarch of a New York crime dynasty to his youngest son. 

Starring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, and Diene Keaton, this 215 minute classic has proven to stand firm and influence watchers almost 50 years later. Winning three Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role, and Best Writing, this is a film that will be remembered forever. The Godfather Part II and The Godfather Part III are also worth noting and continue the level of brilliance featured.

In an unforgettable biopic-drama, David Lean's directed classic of Lawrence of Arabia brought Peter O'Toole, Alec Guinness, and Anthony Quinn. Telling the tale of the titular character T.E Lawrence, this film follows the real story of the English officer who united and led the Arab tribes against the Turks in World War I. 

This story has been adapted from T.E Lawrence's writings a few times, but this is the film to be compared to. Winning 7 Oscars and many other awards, this 1962 classic still stands tall and impressive today. 

The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Judy Garland's lead in The Wizard of Oz is still spoken about today 82 years on. This classic film is directed by Victor Fleming and is revolutionary for its unique characters and, most importantly, colour within a film. Colour for audiences was ground-breaking at this point and paved the way for what films could be. 

Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, and Bert Lahr star alongside Garland in this beautiful family fantasy about young farm girl Dorothy who is swept away from her Kansas home and into a mystical and magical land called Oz. She meets a group of interesting characters, all of who have dreams of their own, as they make their way to the Wizard of Oz, who can grant her wish of returning home.

In Mike Nichol's directed The Graduate, audiences are faced with a comedy-romance about young Ben Braddock, who is stuck between his older lover and her daughter. 

Starring Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft, and Katherine Ross, this adapted screenplay from the novel of the same name won 1 Oscar for Best Director and stands as a genuinely creative and comedic piece of cinema. 

On the Waterfront (1954)

On The Waterfront is a crime drama about a retired prize-fighter who struggles to stand up to his union bosses. The system is corrupt as he fights for his rights, going up against his brother and forming connections with a grieving sister in unlikely places. 

Directed by Elia Kazan, this 1954 classic stars Marlon Brando, Karl Malden, and Lee J. Cobb in a fantastic cinema piece. Winning 8 Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor and Actress in a Leading Role, and many others, this film is not to be missed.

No list of the greatest and most influential US films should be complete without Schindlers List.  Starring Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, and Ben Kingsley is a harrowing and moving story about German-occupied Poland in the Second World War, where Oskar Schindler turns his factory into a refuge for Jews against the German advances. 

Directed by Steven Spielberg and adapted from Thomas Keneally's book of the same name, this film has inspired generations to come and rightfully won 7 Oscars.

If you haven't heard of Singin' In The Rain, then you've missed an entire cultural movement. Directed by Stanely Donen and Gene Kelly, this comedy musical is set in the era of talking pictures in 1920s Hollywood. Following a silent film star who falls in love with a chorus girl, he and his screen partner have to navigate the new media world they find themselves in. 

Also starring Gene Kelly, Donald 'Connor, and Debbie Reynolds, this classic film has influenced many future filmmakers and is referenced throughout a wide variety of popular culture.

This is a beautifully directed family fantasy about an angel sent to Earth to help a tired and frustrated businessman realise that life and the planet wouldn't have been any happier without him around. Directed by Frank Capra, this Oscar-nominated film has been streamed every year since its release 75 years ago. 

Starring James Stewart, Donna Reed, and Lionel Barrymore, this film came at a time where American's needed motivating and cheering up. There was a unanimous mental hurdle throughout America when the war ended, and this film brought joy to people's homes once again.

Sunset Blvd. (1950)

Directed by Billy Wilder, this 1950 classic tells the tale of a screenwriter who forms a relationship with a forgotten film star, who is adamant they will return to cinema. Starring William Holden, Gloria Swanson, and Erich Von Stroheim, this film-noir has been studied and influenced many filmmakers over the decades. This film came when Silent Cinema was on the out and viewed as a level of pretentious compared to more modern talking pictures. The level of meta within, essentially discussing this divide between types of cinema, had never been done before. 

The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)

This moving war drama about British prisoners of war who are forced to build a railway bridge across the River Kwai for their Japanese captors has proven to stand the test of time. David Lean's sublime direction of the tale, as written by Pierre Boulle, has combined a multitude of elements and techniques into a respectful and touching portrayal of this period of history.

Starring William Holden, Alec Guinness, and Jack Hawkins and winning 7 Oscars, this film is worthy of being on your list if you haven't seen it already. 

Some Like It Hot (1959)

Another classic directed by Billy Wilder, this comedy romance is about two male musicians who witness a mob hit. 

They flee but brilliantly disguised as a female band, dressing as women. Of course, their problems don't end there. 

Starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon, this Oscar-winning film has been one that has inspired further comedies. 

This film was made with passion and created a tone that was forward-thinking for the late '50s. The style was bright and colourful, and playful and ultimately is about acceptance and transformation.

Following Luke Skywalker, a young man who joins forces with a Jedi, a pilot, a Wookie, and two droids to save the galaxy, it perfectly set up the universe Lucas wanted to create.

All About Eve (1950)

Joseph L. Mankiewicz directed this 1950 classic about a young and passionate woman Eve as she befriends and attempts to overthrow a successful Broadway star and take her life from her.

Starring Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, and George Sanders, this drama has been quoted and influenced many filmmakers and media throughout the decades. Despite being over 50 years old, this 6-time Oscar-winning film has proven that age doesn't matter.

The African Queen (1951)

Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn star in another classic film together, this time directed by John Huston. The story takes the audience to Africa in World War I. We follow a Canadian riverboat captain and an English missionary who attack a German gunship in the rivers. 

This adventure drama has flicks of romance throughout, and the cast is exceptional. With one Oscar win and eight nominations in total, this film has proven that Huston can make films that last.

Once again, Alfred Hitchcock provided the world with a film classic, one that has been referenced throughout pop culture throughout the decades. Starring Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, and Vera Miles, this film subverted audience expectations and used exceptional new camera techniques for the 1960s.

This story follows a Phoenix-based secretary who embezzles thousands of dollars from her employers. They go on the run and end up in a strange motel run by a young man and his dominating mother. The horror, thriller, mystery epic that has been created has influenced filmmakers to this day. 

Chinatown (1974)

Following a private detective hired to expose an adulterer, this drama mystery was directed by Roman Polanski. 

Starring Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, and John Huston, this is another Oscar-winning classic to be brought to the screens. 

Finding himself caught in a web of lies and mystery, Nicholson's character of J.J.Gittes is the epitome of a private detective stuck in a situation we wouldn't want to be.

Another Jack Nicholson classic came from director Milos Forman in 1975. One flew over the cuckoo's nest follows a criminal who pleads insanity and is sent to a mental institution. A rebellion takes place amongst the patients, lead by Nicholson's R.P. McMurphy. 

Further, starring is Louise Fletcher and Michael Berryman, who provide excellent performances alongside. The 5 Oscars won for this film prove the brilliance of this book adaptation.

The 1994 animated Lion King has proven to be one of Walt Disney's most impactful films, inspiring a few sequels and a remake in 2019. 

This film is directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff and follows an African tribe of lions and the surrounding animals. 

Simba, the heir to the throne, is cast out by his manipulative uncle, who claims that he killed his father to become king. 

This was, in fact, a large plot by his uncle, Scar. 

Starring Matthew Broderick, Jeremy Irons, James Earl Jones, and a spattering of other talented actors, this family animation has become a cultural icon. 

Toy Story (1995)

Disney Pixar has produced an impressive ensemble of films, but it arguably started with Toy Story. 

Directed by John Lasseter and starring Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Don Rickles, and others, it quickly became a family classic.

Following a group of toys led by a cowboy, they feel threatened when their owner gets a new toy, a luxury spaceman. 

They attempt to throw him out of their playroom, only to realise he's not that bad in the end.

Another Disney classic comes in the form of director Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise's Beauty and The Beast. This fantasy animation follows Prince Adam, who has been cursed to live his life as a beast. He hides away in his castle until young Belle enters and befriends him, and he aims to earn her love. 

Starring Paige O'Hara, Robby Benson, and Jesse Corti, this Disney film won 2 Oscars and has inspired remakes and sequels.

This list isn't complete without mentioning Stanley Kubrick, one of America's greatest and most influential directors. This film was written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke and has continued to be referenced within popular media and watched annually. 

Following a group of astronauts who discover an artifact buried on the moon, they attempt to find the origins with the assistance of supercomputer H.A.L. 9000. This film stars Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, and William Sylvester. 

Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948)

John Huston wrote and directed another classic for American cinemas, this time featuring a western. Following two American men searching for work in the 1920s, they convince an elderly prospector to let them mine for gold in the Sierra Madre mountains. 

Starring Humphrey Bogart, Walter Huston, and Tim Holt, this is another classic film that many should watch. 

Annie Hall (1977)

Written and directed by Woody Allen, another prolific American director, this film follows Alvy Singer, a divorced comedian. He ponders on his previous relationship with Annie Hall and wonders why so many of his relationships have ended so abruptly. 

Starring Woody Allen as the titular role, alongside Diane Keaton and Tony Roberts, this comedy romance has lasted decades and inspired filmmakers and remakes.

Based on Thomas Harris' novel, this adaptation stands tall and mighty, once again being quoted in popular culture, even today.
