What Makes a Successful Movie Poster?

To be successful, a movie poster must draw people in and make them want to watch the movie, and also talk about the movie with other people. Here are a few of the main elements a movie poster must have to be successful:

What is the Best Selling Movie Poster of all Time?

Here are some of the best selling movie posters of all time, and why they were so successful:

Back to the Future

Back to the Future is part of a collection of 3 films, and their posters are all quite similar to ensure they are recognisable and consistent. The images are beautifully drawn and are very effective for grabbing people's attention.

The Godfather

The Godfather is also a very simple design, with just bold text and a picture. This is the same as the sequels for Godfather, which makes it recognisable for fans. It doesn't give too much away but tells us a story at the same time, which is why this is such a successful movie poster.

E.T.

The E.T. poster was so successful that it actually won awards when it was first released. It was said, by dreamwork CEO, that the poster captures the emotion of the whole movie, just in the one image. It also shows a religious side to the film, with E.T.'S hand being shown as God.

Gone with the Wind

There are two well known Gone with the Wind movie posters, one being the original and one was designed later on, when it was the thirteenth anniversary. The original movie poster was simple, and the film was very successful as a result; however, the remake of the poster was also known for showing off the romance and passion.

Jurassic Park

One of the best things about the Jurassic Park movie poster is that it is so recognisable. The poster was based on the novel of Jurassic Park that was written in 1990. It uses iconography, using a T-Rex skeleton, which is so simple, but still so iconic to this day.

Jaws

The poster design for Jaws is simple, yet terrifying and leaves you in suspense as to whether the shark actually does eat the poor victim. It is actually one of the most iconic movie posters, still to this day and is one of the most recognised.

Halloween

The tagline on this poster is brilliant, as it leaves viewers wondering, using the word 'HE'. It draws them in and makes them want to know what happens. The poster itself is dark, indicating that the movie is within the horror genre. All you can see is a pumpkin and the character's hand, which is so simple but very effective.

The Exorcist

The movie poster for the Exorcist really shows the off the horror genre of the film itself. The image has a black shadow with limited lighting and a dark background, giving off an eerie effect, which highlights the theme of the film.

The Silence of the Lambs

The Silence of the Lambs movie poster is very unique, as it looks simple, but has many hidden messages behind the design. For example, the poster itself has the actress with a Death's Head Hawkmoth across her mouth to symbolise the 'silence'.

A vintage poster is an original poster that was used to advertise the movie when it was released. These posters were seen inside and outside cinemas, on bus stops and in train stations. Vintage posters aren't the reprints that were printed to sell in shops as replicas. Many people collect vintage movie posters, as they are brilliant to have and to use for interior design purposes.

They are also worth a lot of money, as these posters are very rare and extremely hard to come by. These vintage posters usually have some wear and tear as they are so old, which is also a really good way to tell if they are original or not. These posters were usually sold on to dealers and weren't really sold to the public, which is why they are in such high demand now.

Many people don't really know the difference between a print and a poster, but there actually is a massive difference. For example, printing is becoming more of a popular choice, and they give off an excellent modern look, using all the latest technology. On the other hand, posters are much easier to do and aren't usually worth a lot, unless they have been autographed.

In conclusion, posters are more about the quantity, and printing is more about the quality. Printing is usually done on thicker paper, which means they are at a better standard than posters. Posters use bright and vibrant colours, but they must be maintained well to ensure they carry on looking as good as new.

There are a lot of factors to take into consideration when checking if a movie poster is original, but it is so important to go to a professional if you are unsure. Some movie posters have been authenticated, which means they are approved original movie posters. An original movie poster is the poster that was used for advertising the movie when it was first released and were usually stuck up on billboards, bus stops, train stations and in and around the cinemas.

The posters that were made after, to sell in shops, are reprints and therefore aren't original, so aren't worth as much. It is important to check on the description of the poster before you buy it, as they aren't allowed to label them as originals; however, many do. It is important to use a professional and authorised movie poster selling shop.
